Summary: "Pretty basic"

I returned this book--it was pretty basic. Granted, I didn't read the whole thing but after looking through it I realized that it didn't offer anything beyond what I already knew from speaking to other parents who have been through the process and attending a general lecture in my area about this topic. If you are looking for a place to start, then this would be fine, but if you are looking for something outside of the mainstream, then this isn't it.

Summary: "Buy it New or Buy it Used...But BUY IT!!"

I first checked this out of my local library (1st edition)and read it. You can't miss with this book. It will give you incredible insight and perhaps balance anxieties you have if you are in the midst of preparing for college. It will give you confidence that you know all about the college selection process. If you've missed something, you will at least know what it is, and hopefully, have time to address it.

Read it early. Refer to it often (which is why I bought it used). If you have family or friends with kids in 8th-10th grades, tell them this book is out there.

I haven't seen the 2nd edition and couldn't tell what it adds from the inside cover, etc. that you can view online (they really should stress what's new in the 2nd edition). My kids are still years from college, so by the time there are, I will buy the current version then.

Summary: "THE textbook for college counseling at The White Mountain School"

As a college counselor, I try to read pretty much everything published in the field, with an eye to recommending the best for my students. After all, applying to college can be a frightening process, all the more alarming because of its complexity and apparent inscrutability. In this second edition, Admission Matters takes the reader through the whole process - from identifying colleges that are right for a given student, through applying for admission and for financial aid, to how to choose which college to attend once accepted. The authors unravel the complexity, explain the jargon, and clarify the seeming inconsistencies of admissions decisions. There are worksheets to help students identify their own priorities in the college search, charts to illustrate the elements of standardized testing and to graph decisions "by the numbers" (prepare to be surprised), practical advice on visiting colleges and interviewing and crafting an essay, a sample blank Common Application, a timeline for the process, and a worksheet for comparing financial aid offers. This book is so complete, so professional, so readable and clear that - for the first time in all the years I've been advising students - I am buying a copy for each of them.

Summary: "Excellent and Realistic Read!"

This is an outstanding read for parents, counselors, and even students. As a college counselor I've come across many books that suggest if you do this, you'll get into here, which we all know is very unlikely. Admissions Matters 2nd edition is realistic, and full of useful information about the admissions process. This is a great read for the students who are just beginning to plan their future and may not know where to start. It's a great read for students who have their list of colleges and now need to learn more about what is needed to apply to those specific schools and so forth. This book covers topics such as standardized testing, putting together your college list, interviews, college visits, early decision and so forth. This book is realistic, a quick read, and helpful to any family who is starting the college guidance process.
